This isn’t going to be an article about some long lost special technique that no one has ever heard of before. It’s not the ‘magic button’ to whisk you away to internet glory. It’s not about how to finally rid yourself of the 9 to 5 blues. It is however, something you should plan for and something you should seriously consider once your business is starting to gain some ground.

Thank goodness for Cat Heiter!

Cat is a unique story. I met her when we were both involved in MPAM (a very old downline builder) and we got along great since day one. Back then, I had just taken the reigns at I Love Hits and was doing all the support and customer service myself. I did enjoy it, but it took a lot of my time up. Cat, was trying to get her own business off the ground and started to offer her services to various traffic exchanges.

What was her service? Simple, she would be the customer support and service admin for different programs. She was doing it at MPAM, so she branched out into the traffic exchange industry. She offered to handle I Love Hits and I was at cross road…

I mean, I Love Hits was my baby. It was my bread and butter and something I care about deeply. I was VERY scared to let go and give control of the inner workings of it to Cat. Not that I didn’t trust Cat, I just felt like I had to be involved in the day to day operations of I Love Hits.

But, I let go…

Cat took over the service side of I Love Hits and here’s some numbers to think about. When I was running the complete operation of I Love Hits, we generated about 20-30 new members a day. Since Cat came on board, we are now averaging about 50-70. That’s double. Why? I could concentrate on promoting and building I Love Hits, and Cat could take care of the service side of things.

It was perfect. So much so, that she now does support for every one of my programs, from SWAT Traffic to Affiliate Funnel. Again, this is not a magic button, this is not an instant riches program. This is something you will need to consider once your business starts to take off.

One of the people responsible for me to finally ‘let go’ was Mike Paetzold. Mike and me hang out daily in the SWAT Traffic training room and for years he was telling me to let go and concentrate on building the programs around me. Mike even took it one step further this week and wrote one of the most important e-books I have ever read called Easily Outsource.

This is one of those books that will never be a best seller, simply because only a handful of people will ‘get it’. It took me a few years to ‘get it’ but Mike kicked me in the rear a few times and his new e-book is something any serious entrepreneur should keep handy.

Outsourcing is a golden nugget. It’s the different between 50 new people joining your mailing list a day compared to 20. It allows you much more freedom and above all else, allows you to build YOUR business and bring new people into your circle of influence.

Everybody comes online looking to ‘make money and start to work full time from home’. This is the dream of so many people in this business and rightfully so, I mean the greatest feeling in the world is getting up, developing your business and your brand. I think of nothing more rewarding that owning your own business, it really is a wonderful thing.

How long does it take? What is that magic number? Days, weeks, months or is it years? I’ll give you my opinion on it, it’s the latter. Yes, forget all those ‘get rich quick’ schemes you have read about. All those schemes and randomizers that promised you that you could sit back and let the money come rolling in. They do not exist. Here’s the truth, it takes an investment of a few years to get these things going. Sure, some people may do it quicker, but all I can talk about is my experience, and for me it took a few years of learning the ropes.

Let me say this, you will NOT get rich from surfing a traffic exchange alone and you probably won’t be making a decent income off them for at least 6 months. Why? Simple, you should be trying and are in the process of building a ‘business’.

Go offline, try to start a business and the turn around ‘number’ seems to be between 3 to 5 years, before a new business takes shape and starts earning the owner a profit. Yes, the internet can cut this down but not in the amount of time most ‘hype machine’ programs promise.

That being said, you have to develop your business and your name online. If you have been surfing a traffic exchange for a month, and see no results, try a new splash page, switch up your surfing schedule but never give up. That’s the easy road and the way to pin blame on someone or something else. The fact is, this business needs to be constantly attended to and grown into something solid.

Yeah, I’ll say it. You need to keep surfing! You need to keep that upgraded membership. You need to pay your membership dues! You need to invest your time! You need to invest money! You need to stay in front of people’s face! You need to stay focused!

This is what has worked for me, nothing more and nothing less. Here’s a step by step playbook of my experience, and you can make it your own as well. Step one, find something you are passionate about and start writing about it. If it’s in the internet marketing field, put your own unique twist on it. Step two, meet the right people, attend seminars, online workshops, take part in online forums. And finally promote you! Invest in YOU, build your name and your brand and you will see some great results.

If you have ever surfed a traffic exchange, chances are you have heard of Tony Tezak, one of the most active and successful traffic exchange users to ever pick up a mouse. It got me thinking, because of Tony’s success at surfing the exchanges, what would be my idea of the perfect surfer? What kind of personality is required to do really well at traffic exchange advertising? What does that person need to ‘do’ to become successful?

The perfect surfer must be dedicated. They must not get discouraged if they see their numbers drop, and they must not get too excited if they see their numbers soar. ‘Steady as she goes’ seems to be the best way to go. Have a goal and work towards it. If you want to hit 1,000 hits a day, work on a plan and stay focused until your reach that number.

The perfect surfer must NOT rely on their downline. Sure, it’s great to get the residual traffic that traffic exchanges provide, but they must not be afraid to get in front of their computer and click for an hour or so each day. Not only does this help the industry as a whole, it helps the clicker know what works for promoting different pages and what does not.

The perfect surfer must spend money. Yes, folks we are all trying to run some kind of business, and while the traffic exchanges are free to use, buying traffic or upgrading in various exchanges is something everyone should look at. I mean, let’s be real, your fingers do start to get tired after a session on I Love Hits, invest wisely in a traffic exchange that gives you the best bang for your buck and then get back to clicking the next day!

The perfect surfer must understand how traffic exchanges work. The more they understand the more they become effective promoters. They know that you won’t be able to sign up any referrals on a copy cat affiliate site that reads like an e-book, they know how to create smart and catchy squeeze / splash pages.

And finally the perfect surfer must have fun while surfing. Yes, it takes a lot of time and yes it becomes ‘boring’ but they are excited because they know with each and every click, that could mean a new lead and or a referral. If you do not have a love for what you are doing, you should not be doing it. This is why this could be the GREATEST industry to get involved in, because I don’t know about you, but I love these programs!

Tip 4 - Keep focused. It’s very easy to get lost in the shuffle and even easier to get swept away by all the big hype and big nonsense that frequents the traffic exchange arena. Remember, this if nothing else, if it sounds to good to be true, it probably is. If some website is promising millions, it’s best that you run for cover. However, this is where your ‘network from Lesson 3′ will come into play. if you have a question, ask around and see what others experience may have been with it. So the key to this is very simple, once you have found your program or business of choice, buckle down and remain focused. Speaking of which….

Tip 5 - What is your business? Be a leader, not a follower! If you have a good idea, put it on paper. If you think that new website you just created may be popular, start to promote it. If you are already a member of a program, keep at it! Find what you are good at, and work with that. I started writing about traffic exchanges, because I was good at working with them. It’s a natural progression and if you search for it, you will find your reason for being online as well! We can all make a living online, it just takes time and effort (and a whole lot of networking!)

Tip 6 - Do not be afraid to ask questions! There is no such thing as a bad question and for my years of working online I have heard this all too many times ‘I don’t want to sound dumb’…Everyone was new to this industry, so do not hide any questions which you may have. Ask in the forums, e-mail me, phone me, write me a letter, just get the question answered. You will feel a lot better about your time online when you have an understanding of what you are working with. Hit exchanges can be quite complicated at times, there is absolutely nothing wrong with asking that burning question!

Tip 7 - Have fun! It’s that simple. Work hard at your business, put in the time and effort you would any business and use the tools which are around you. However if you are not enjoying yourself, what is the point? I love my job, I love working from home and I would not trade it for the world. You should ENJOY your time online and your brand new business! It’s yours!

So there is my seven steps to success? Nope, by no means is this a follow through guide. It’s just some tips that have helped me along the way. If anyone promises you wealth beyond your imagination, especially online, it is probably too good to be true. Again, hard work, effort, time and money is what worked for me and trust me, I am not sailing on any yachts in the ocean. I pay bills, I work longer than I did when I was offline but I’m having a blast. And that is the greatest thing about online business, making money and enjoying yourself!

If you are using traffic exchanges, the best thing you can do for any online campaign is to create a splash page, tailor made for the specific product or program. Let’s face it, splash pages work and get great results, but out of a dozen splash pages I see while surfing, only about 4 to 5 of them really grab my attention.

The following is a small tutorial on what I consider to be key points to building very effective pages.

Rule number 1 - You need to grab the viewers attention immediately! There is only a few seconds that your page has to make a lasting impressions and to get the most attention, you need to capture the viewer’s eyes right away. This is done by two ways, the first is a ’stop them dead in the their tracks’ headline. It can be funny, it can be bold but the important thing is that it’s memorable. The next thing to add is an eye catching graphic. Whether it be a logo or a funny graphic you found online, this needs to go hand in hand with your headline. Let them both feed off each other to create an intro so powerful, people have to stop and look.

Rule number 2 - Do not bore your readers to death! Keep your splash page’s ad copy to the MAXIMUM of one paragraph. What should you put in these 3 to 4 sentences? Simple, to the point copy that creates curiosity and outlines major features of the site you wish to promote. Again, the idea behind splash pages is to get people interested, DON’T TRY TO SELL THEM! This is very important, because if you try to sell your viewer, trust me, 15 seconds is not enough time to do so. Get them curious about your site and then let your ad copy on the main site do the selling. Rule of thumb, splash pages are to get people interested, not to do the selling.

And finally Rule number 3 - Always request an action! It does not matter how impressive your headline, graphic and copy are, without telling your viewer exactly what you want them to do, you have wasted an otherwise perfect splash page. Whether it be to click and open a new window, fill out a form (e-mail capture) or bookmark a site, you must tell the viewer exactly what you want them to do. Keep it simple, and right to the point!

Those are my three rules for the perfect splash page. I call them the A.C.A.’s of splash page design. Grab their ‘Attention’, create ‘Curiosity’ and then request ‘Action’!
