Yesterday’s article about traffic exchange brand awareness was just the tip of the ice berg for me. For the next week or so, I will be re-publishing my strategies for effective traffic exchange advertising on the ILH / SWAT blog.
Brand awareness in the traffic exchanges is critical because now more than ever, people will only do business with people they know. It’s a scary world out there, and the internet can be a vicious place. My favorite author Jeffrey Gitomer always says ‘All things being equal, people buy from people they like. All things not being equal, people still buy from people they like’. That is the power of keeping your brand awareness in the traffic exchanges.
But let’s take a step back and look at the first step in getting people to notice your brand. Remember, the traffic exchanges are a visual medium so site design and image are critical to your success. You essentially want to create a squeeze page that stops viewers in their tracks. There are thousands of traffic exchange surfers out there, and a large majority of them are promoting generic affiliate links.
That’s where ‘S.O.L.A.S.T.’ comes in, which stands for sticking out like a sore thumb. It’s a very important concept in your advertising because your brand awareness will not take effect unless people notice you. So…Get noticed!
People always complain about sound on squeeze pages, but a funny little tidbit is that the best converting squeeze pages use some kind of multi-media, whether it’s sound or video. So…Stick out like a sore thumb, get noticed!
With thousands upon thousands of generic affiliate links in rotation, how do you stick out? Well, the first step is to do things differently than the rest. Like I mentioned above, use a squeeze page, use some kind of multi-media, hire some one to create custom graphics and make your pages look like a million bucks.
This does not take much money to do either, there are wonderful services out there that can custom build you a squeeze page / splash page for about 30 dollars or less. And when you put that into context, 30 dollars for the potential of unlimited leads…Well. It’s a no brainer.
In closing, do things that your competition isn’t. Stick out like a sore thumb and get noticed in the traffic exchanges today!

T.E.B.A. - Funny little acronym that I came up with a few years ago. It kind of rolls off your tongue too. But what does it stand for and more importantly, how does one use ‘T.E.B.A.’ to their advantage in the traffic exchanges.
A brief history on Traffic Exchange Brand Awareness. Being a surfer for so many years, I have seen a lot of ‘programs’ come and go. As everyone knows, this is a visual medium so great graphics go a long way. When I’m surfing, a great site design will literally stop me in my tracks and make me take notice to what is being promoted.
But there is another catch to this. Strong ‘brands’ in this business stick out even more. Think about this, people come and go in the traffic exchanges all the time. Let’s say ‘Surfer Jim’ just joined I Love Hits or SWAT Traffic and was very excited to promote ‘Program X’. Being the dedicated surfer he is, Jim clicks for a few weeks and sees sites like Affiliate Funnel, Hits Connect, and Instant Squeeze Page Generator. Jim takes notice but keeps on surfing…
After a month or so, Jim has had it. He’s promoting a generic affiliate URL and not concentrating on building his brand and building his list. So he gives up, swearing off traffic exchanges and then dives in some good old fashioned PPC…
After a good 6 months, Jim has had it with PPC. His budget has been maxed but he discovered a new business that he is interested in, and within the training they teach new members to try using traffic exchanges…Jim decides, what the heck, let’s give it another go round. So Surfer Jim starts round two of his traffic exchange advertising. What does he notice the first few days of surfing?
Funny little story but I hope it outlines the entire concept of traffic exchange brand awareness. The idea is to be seen as much in 6 months, then you are today. Again, people come and people go in this business, but they always seem to return. Your goal as a traffic exchange advertiser is to be seen and grab their attention today and down the road. This is traffic exchange brand awareness and to make this work for you, you need patience, a great site design, and most importantly some way to get those surfer’s like Jim onto your mailing list.
I’m about to jump on the plane to head to Washington for this week’s seminar but I thought I would throw up one small blog update to let everyone know about the amazing numbers we did this past week.

In my previous post, I detailed the three must have resources that you should be using in the traffic exchanges. I touched on today’s topic because I wanted to go into detail about the ‘bonus tip’ I talked about. They are called autoresponders and they represent a huge shift in thinking that every internet marketer goes through.
Brand and build. These two words hold much more weight than I can describe but when I focused my energy and effort into branding my name and building my mailing list, success seemed to come to my business like nothing before it.
Here’s why. In the traffic exchanges, we are often sold on the ‘quick fix’. The quick way to internet success the quick way to get an early retirement, the quickest way possible to earn a living online.
The problem for me was that after 3 years of literally scraping by, I didn’t see the big picture because I was still trying to get that quick fix.
Branding your name and building your mailing list are an ongoing task. These two things never get old, and they never lose their importance. Your mailing list is the most important asset your business will ever generate and once it going, it does snowball, but the problem is usually getting the snowball down the hill.
This is where branding your name and the traffic exchanges come in. By using these services, you can successfully promote your likeness or business in front of thousands of surfers, every single day. If you do this for an extended period of time, your name starts to stick and it’s much easier to get people into your circle of influence (ie: your mailing list). I coined the term ‘traffic exchange brand awareness’ and it’s the ONLY thing you should be doing in the traffic exchanges.
Don’t try to ’sell’, don’t try to ‘build a downline’, don’t try to get user participation. Brand your name and build your list. That’s it. Once you do, you start to generate the mailing list using the autoresponder of your choice and before you know it, that snowball starts to roll…

The 3 Must Have Tools (Not Using These? You Are Wasting Your Time!)
Every week in the S.W.A.T. Traffic seminar room we have our training sessions where we go over the traffic exchanges and how to pull the best results from them. For over a year now, a lot of the members who attend the seminars have said over and over again, that the follow 3 tools are a MUST HAVE for your business and advertising in the exchanges. I’ll go over them as well as add my ‘bonus’ tool at the end.
1. A Splash Page! They are called squeeze pages as well, but the general idea is to promote something YOU created, not a generic affiliate page or promotional URL. You can hire many designers around the net who create splash pages for you, for roughly about 20-30 bucks. Very low cost and the first in our MUST HAVE tools. I recommend using Splash Page Maker if you are comfortable with designing your own pages and want to edit them when you see fit, or Black Hat Graphics if you want someone to design one for you.
2. Your own host / domain name! This was one of the biggest steps I did in my business was to bite the bullet and invest in my own hosting and domain name. It’s a huge step because too many times we use the free hosting accounts which are great to learn your way around, but if you are serious about your business you MUST HAVE your own hosting and domain name. I highly recommend Zoot Host as this is a service made for traffic exchanges by a traffic exchange user. The best hosting around, bar none!
3. Ad tracking! It keeps coming up, week in and week out, if you are NOT tracking, you are wasting your money, time and effort. This is how you manage your efforts, and see what is working and what is not in your advertising campaigns. I love tracking so much, I use two separate services, but always recommend Hits Connect.
Jon’s bonus tip! You should also invest in your own auto responder! Without an auto responder, you are not building your list. You see, there are two things, and only two things you should be doing in the traffic exchanges. Building your brand, and building your mailing list!
Please note, these are not ’secrets’ that no one doesn’t discuss. These are the 3 (plus one) tools that you MUST HAVE in your traffic exchange advertising. Everything else is secondary. Use these tools, attend the seminars and build your name online and you will see results!
